Relationship & Sex Therapy in Oakland and Throughout California

Let’s Talk About the Things You’ve Been Afraid to Say Out Loud

You love your partner, but lately it feels like you're living more like roommates than romantic partners. You keep having the same conversations, avoiding the same difficult topics, and wondering how you can love someone so much and still feel this disconnected.

As a relationship and sex therapist in Oakland, I help couples have the conversations that feel difficult while helping you better understand each other, express what you need, and reconnect on a deeper emotional and physical level.

Nothing Is Off the Table

Sex. Desire. Intimacy. Communication. Trust. Conflict. Identity.

If it’s affecting your relationship, we can talk about it.

I create a space where you can be honest about what’s really happening in your relationship, even when the conversation feels uncomfortable, vulnerable, or difficult to have on your own.

You've Asked for More Connection. But You Still Feel Unseen, Unheard, and Unchosen.

Maybe you're struggling with:

  • Feeling disconnected from your partner

  • Having difficult conversations about sex and intimacy

  • Feeling like you're more like roommates than partners

  • Struggling to communicate your needs and desires

  • Rebuilding trust and connection after hurt

  • Wanting more emotional and physical intimacy

Couples Therapy That Goes Beneath the Surface

I help couples have the difficult conversations that lead to deeper connection, rebuilt trust, and greater emotional and physical intimacy.

Using Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, we’ll work toward a relationship where you both feel heard, understood, and supported.

It’s Not Just About the Sex

You still care deeply about each other, but something feels missing.

  • You've been in a sexless marriage for a while, and the distance and lack of desire between you feels painful.

  • Sex has started to feel transactional instead of a place where you feel desired, connected, and close.

  • You've stopped bringing it up because you don't want another argument, another awkward conversation, or another moment where you both end up feeling rejected or misunderstood.

you’ve tried talking about it

  • You've talked about the sex.

  • You've talked about the communication.

  • You've promised to spend more time together.

  • You've tried to stop fighting.

  • You've tried giving each other space.

  • And yet, somehow, you keep ending up in the same place.

Over time, the things left unsaid can create distance, resentment, and loneliness—leaving you wondering how two people who love and care about each other can feel so disconnected.

maybe it’s not just about the sex

Sometimes what's happening in the bedroom is connected to what's happening everywhere else in the relationship.

I help you explore the conversations, patterns, and desires that can feel difficult to navigate on your own.

Through online sex and couples therapy in California, I support couples in Oakland and throughout California as they work toward a more fulfilling intimate relationship and reconnect with themselves and each other.

A Different Approach to Couples Therapy

What if your communication problems aren't really about communication?

Sometimes the argument about dishes isn't about the dishes. The fight about sex isn't only about sex. And the distance between you isn't necessarily because you've stopped caring. I help couples explore the deeper experiences that shape how they connect, including intimacy, desire, identity, culture, and the things that often go unspoken.

I specialize in supporting individuals and couples with:

  • Improving communication and repairing conflict

  • Differences in desire, libido, and sexual needs

  • Having difficult conversations about sex and intimacy

  • Exploring ethical non-monogamy and changing relationship structures

  • Rebuilding intimacy and connection after betrayal

  • Shame, vulnerability, and feeling disconnected from your sexuality

  • Navigating interracial and intercultural relationships

  • Creating a more fulfilling emotional and physical connection

  • Pornography and compulsive sexual behavior

I take pride in working with interracial and intercultural couples, helping partners navigate cultural differences, family expectations, and the unique challenges that can arise when two people come from different backgrounds.

I believe healing happens when we have space to be fully seen, not just as partners, but as our full, authentic selves. Through this work, you may begin to understand each other differently, communicate with less defensiveness, talk more openly about sex and desire, and feel more confident making decisions about the relationship you want to create together.

Do You Feel Seen, Chosen, and Loved?

LGBTQ+ Therapy California

You know what you want your relationship to feel like. So why does it feel so hard to actually get there?

There’s a particular kind of loneliness that comes from continually reaching for connection and still feeling alone in your relationship.

It requires creating the environment where both partners can actually see, hear, understand, and experience each other differently.

four pillars of Connection

1. Curiosity
Instead of assuming you already know what your partner means, we slow down and get curious. What’s underneath the argument? What are you really asking for? What might your partner be trying to communicate?

2. Vulnerability
We move beyond defensiveness and surface level conversations to talk about what’s actually happening underneath the fears, desires, disappointments, and needs that can be difficult to say out loud.

3. Chemistry
Connection isn’t only emotional. It can also be playful, sensual, flirtatious, sexual, and fun. We make space to explore what creates desire, what feels good, and what may have gotten lost between you.

4. What’s Missing
Sometimes the most important part of your relationship is the thing neither of you is talking about. We pay attention to what isn’t being said, what isn’t happening, and what you both may be longing for but haven’t known how to name it.

Therapy isn’t just about leaving with better communication skills. It’s about leaving with a deeper understanding of yourself, your partner, and what your relationship needs to feel connected again.

A Space for Honest, Intentional Relationships

Sex Positive & Judgment Free

A space where you can talk openly about sexuality without shame or judgment, while exploring what feels authentic, meaningful, and right for you.

Relationships in All Forms

Whether you're in a monogamous, interracial, intercultural, LGBTQ+, or ethically non-monogamous relationship, therapy is tailored to your unique relationship, not someone else's idea of what it should look like.

More Than Communication

Communication matters, but we also explore the deeper patterns shaping your relationship, including attachment, desire, identity, culture, and the stories you carry about love, sex, and intimacy.

Intimacy With Intention

Long-term relationships can fall into routines where sex and intimacy become an afterthought. Together, we'll create more intentionality around your emotional and physical connection so your relationship feels fulfilling both inside and outside the bedroom.

Teaching Meets Therapy

As a Professor of Black Sexualities and Racialized Masculinities, I teach about sexuality, identity, trauma, and relationships every day. I bring that depth of knowledge into every session, helping you better understand yourself, your partner, and your relationship.

Honest Conversations

Some of the most important conversations are also the hardest to have. I help couples slow down, communicate with intention, and talk about the things they've been afraid to say out loud.

Hi, I’m Gena Bowman, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and the founder of The Agency Within You. I hold a B.A. in Ethnic Studies with a concentration in Genders and Sexualities in Communities of Color and a Master’s in Social Work.

As a professor of Black Sexualities and Racialized Masculinities, I bring a unique lens to couples therapy, particularly when we’re exploring sexuality, intimacy, identity, culture, and the ways these experiences shape how we love and connect.

I work with individuals and couples who are trying to make sense of what’s happening in their relationships or within themselves. Sometimes you know something needs to change but aren’t quite sure how to get there.

I take a warm, honest, and collaborative approach to therapy. Together, we can look at what’s working, what isn’t, and what you actually want moving forward.

For couples, that might mean, finding your way back to emotional or physical intimacy, or learning how to have the conversations you’ve been avoiding. For individuals, it might mean exploring your identity, boundaries, self-trust, sexuality, or simply figuring out how to feel more like of your authentic self.

Therapy doesn’t have to be about becoming someone new. Sometimes it’s about getting back to the parts of yourself you’ve had to quiet, question, or put aside.

If you’re ready to take that next step, schedule your free consultation today.

Why The Agency Within You

california sex therapist for couples

I created The Agency Within You as a space where people can reconnect with themselves, find their voice, understand what they need, and make choices that feel true to who they are.

Because I believe healthy relationships begin with knowing yourself.

Agency is being able to ask: Who am I in this relationship? What do I need? What do I desire? And how can I express those things while staying connected to my partner?

When you feel empowered to honor your identity, communicate your needs, and express your desires, you create the possibility for deeper intimacy, stronger connection, and relationships where both people feel seen, heard, and chosen.
